Routing software has come a long way since 2010 when I compiled this review – BUT the algorithms have not … 🙂
Here are a few of the products you should consider nowadays (2024):
- PredictWind Offshore – https://www.predictwind.com/apps/offshore-app
- qtVlm French nav software across so many platforms. qtVlm is certified for Iridium GO! and can also access directly to your Great Circle (squid) grib subscriptions. It includes an AIS module (with the possibility to retrieve targets via Internet) and an Instruments Module, that can acquire data from various NMEA sources, or from internal GPS. It can also send performance data (VMG, target speed, etc) to a navigation system or exterior repeaters. It can also send data to qtVlm Companion, an Android and Android Wear application specially designed to interact with qtVlm.- https://www.meltemus.com/index.php/en/

- Weather 4D – https://www.weather4d.com/

Over 7 posts I reviewed products and analysed the way in which weather routing algorithms worked:
- Routing 1 of 7 : Planes, cars, boats and autopilots…
- Routing 2a of 7 : Routing planning and optimisation an extra brain as well as a pair of hands…
- Routing 2b of 7 : Routing planning and optimisation an extra brain as well as a pair of hands…
- Routing 3 of 7 :Data Inputs (wind, pressure, tide, streams, wave heights etc..)
- Routing 4 of 7 : Boat characteristics & learning to Wally!
- Routing 5 of 7 : Algorithms
- Routing 6 of 7 : A Chart by any other name…
- Routing 7 of 7 : – Conclusion & Oscar Ceremony 🙂
The post on algorithms is still relevant today and gives an insight into what is going on “inside the black box”….
